This is such a relaxing show, but it makes me hungry! And I really love that Okaasan considers Kiyo to be one of her girls even though she couldn't make it as a Miko herself.

It will distract them when working. I've been working in hotel ryokan last year. not allowed to bring any smartphone when working, only hotel issued phone. Its either keep it in locker or not bring it at all (which i always do).
Even more, Maiko's work is to entertain the guest during work time so its not permitted for a single distraction when working. In addition their work field is build around tradition so it will be harder to break these thing.
I've heard about my friend classmate that work as intern in ryokan. She work as nakai and was worried about her other colleagues guest that the said colleagues not there attending their guest. The intern got reported and demoted to supply management which not what she applied for then internship (because she breaking rule about attending other nakai's guest). Its just that much strict working in traditional sector.

My works is not that demanding as them or modern room maid. But Maiko, they are to provide 100% hospitality without fail. And smartphone is very very distrating thing. They got phone in off-hours tho... the dormitory telephone. We don't know what you doing with your smartphone. So dormitory telephone is safer. You don't expect yourself playing with smartphone without improving your hospitality right? Its better to talk with other people or resting.

PS: in hospitality field work you are working all day from start of the day (around 7am) and till late night. you were expected to rest than fidling with your smartphone so the next morning you can work your best. There is no excuse to not smiling all day because something like not enough rest.

I think it´s so they rest at night. They had practice and whatever in the morning and have to attend guests form afternoon to evening. The only opportunity to use smartphone is only during the night, but they needed their sleep during that time and smartphones are a big distraction.

I think it would still be too distracting. It seems like they wake up really early and get home late at night too. Sumire got home when the chime started so that would be around midnight. Now imagine, in that type of routine to have a smartphone with access to social media.... I mean, I'm not (terribly) addicted, I can easily go a day or two without, but if I got to bed late, and let my guard down to open insta just before going to sleep, sometimes I can still be scrolling at 3 AM. Now imagine having to wake up at 5AM or something, or maybe that's just Kiyo who has to prepare food for 10 girls and thus has to wake up at such an inhumane time.

its not just a job, it a way of life, they must be completely dedicated to it and mobiles are not part of that tradition
